WhatsApp introduced Read receipts a couple of years back in 2014. With WhatsApp read receipts, you can get to know if your message has been seen/read by the recipient and the time when your WhatsApp is read. However, WhatsApp did make sure to include a setting which allows you to disable read receipts. So, in this article, I will share how to turn off read receipts on WhatsApp. And later, the interesting part – how to get the read receipts on WhatsApp even if turned off?
Turn off Read Receipts on WhatsApp
I will be using WhatsApp for iOS for the steps and screenshots. However, the method is almost similar with minor differences.
1. Open WhatsApp and select Settings tab at the bottom right corner.
2. Tap on Account under Settings.
3. Select Privacy on the next screen.
4. At the bottom, toggle Read Receipts to OFF.
With, this read receipts will be disabled and others won’t know if you read their message or not. At the same time, you too cannot see if your message is read or not if you turn off read receipts.
Now if you wanted to get read receipts even though you or other contact turned them off then you need to leverage one of the features of Read Receipts.
Get Read Receipts on WhatsApp even if turned off
If you look closely, it is mentioned below the Read Receipts settings that “Read Receipts are always sent for group chats.” So, even if you turn off read receipts, you will get receipts for the messages received in a group and others too will get Read timestamp when you read their messages.
You can take advantage of this and get read receipts even if the other contact has disabled them. Create a WhatsApp group with only that contact and you till get Seen by with the timestamp even if that contact has turned off read receipts.
